Examinations
Students may request the use of a derived result for Stage 2 examinations if they are suffering from a medical condition or on the grounds of a misadventure:
Medical Condition
Students may request the use of a derived result for Stage 2 examinations if they are suffering from a medical condition and as a consequence:
- are unable to attend an examination; or
- sit an examination while impaired.
Misadventure
Students may also request the use of a derived result on the grounds of misadventure or personal circumstances. A derived result for misadventure in assessment is requested as the consequence of an incident beyond the student’s and/or the school’s control that affects a student’s ability to participate in, or comply with the requirements or conditions of, an assessment on the same basis as other students. Examples include, a death in the family, a car accident, technical issues experienced during an online examination, or a fire alarm during an examination.
Also, an application for personal circumstances may be based on interrupted schooling because of family responsibilities or cultural obligations.
Investigations
Students who are eligible for special provisions owing to a recent medical condition or situation beyond their control that may impact on the completion of their external investigation should be given every opportunity to complete the assessment before the submission date. For external investigations reasonable adjustments include extensions to school due dates or rescheduling assessments. Reducing word counts is not an appropriate adjustment as work is externally assessed.
A student who is unable to complete the external investigation before the submission date may be eligible for an extension to SACE Board due dates on the grounds of special provisions. Applications for an extension on the grounds of special provisions must be submitted to the SACE Board using Form 31 [PDF 190KB] before the final date for submitting results in Schools Online. Please note that teacher absences, other teacher-related difficulties, or matters of the student's own choosing (such as holidays) are not grounds for special provisions.
In extenuating circumstances a student may be eligible for the use of a derived result for the external investigation if an extension to the submission date is not viable to the student's ongoing circumstances or illness. A special provisions application requesting the use of a derived result Form 32 [PDF 108KB] must be submitted to the SACE Board, with supporting evidence, before the submission date for the assessment or any approved extension date. If approval is granted for the use of a derived result, the teacher will be required to identify evidence of the student's learning on which to base the predicted result.
Requesting a derived result
To request the use of a derived result, schools submit Form 32 [PDF 108KB] within 3 days of the student’s last examination, or for an investigation before the submission date of the assessment or any approved extension date.
The following evidence is required when requesting the use of a derived result:
- All requests require a Section 1: Confidential school report (Form 32 [PDF 108KB]).
- Requests for medical conditions / psychological disorders also require a Section 2: Confidential medical practitioner’s report, parts A and B (Form 32 [PDF 108KB]).
- Applications for misadventure or personal circumstances require supporting documentation from a teacher / teachers, the principal, or the principal’s delegate for events occurring at school, or a statutory declaration describing the misadventure / personal circumstances outside the school.
All requests for a derived result must include a clear recommendation from the student’s principal (or delegate) regarding the eligibility of the student for special provisions, the accuracy of the information provided, and whether or not the request is supported by the school.
