Meet the artist
Alexandra Wallman-Civit, recipient of the 2021 Credit Union SA Community Award and the 2021 Eckersley’s Encouragement Award.
How do you feel to be an award winner at the 2021 SACE Art Show?
It brings me much joy to be recognised for my work. And while awards are great, fulfillment, contribution, and passion are better.

What was the inspiration behind your work?
I was suffering for a long time in hospital, and I am not sure it was the pain that inspired as much as the recovery from it. No matter what provides the relief, becoming pain free after chronic suffering elevates the spirit. Clarity. Renewed appreciation for life, for even the simplest things like going for a walk or enjoying a good meal; this turned into the nourishment of my creative impulse, which opened the door to the inspiration for this piece.
Tell us about the creative process you took with your work?
‘Collateral Beauty’ is a piece about using the simplest devices to convey profound meaning and expression. Through the application of several techniques, using a blue biro enabled me to achieve this effect.
What advice would you have to Stage 2 Visual Arts students in 2021?
Fundamentally, art is about seeing, feeling, thinking, learning, and growing. But understanding information about traditional and contemporary concepts of art, line, value, edges, materials, surfaces, composition, and colour makes it possible for you, as an artist, not to be limited by what you don’t know but free to decide what you want to do with greater understanding.
What pathway are you taking after your SACE – university/TAFE/jobs?
I will be studying Medicine at the University of Adelaide in 2022 after taking a year off to enjoy and peruse my passions- art, biology and scuba diving among others.
