Meet the artist
Sophie Arundell, 2021 IEU SACE Art Show Award recipient.
How do you feel to be an award winner at the 2021 SACE Art Show?
I feel very surprised and delighted about winning an award at the SACE Art Show, I honestly didn’t think I would get into the art show itself, let alone get an award!

What was the inspiration behind your work?
2020 was a rough year for everyone, I had an especially rough year mental health wise, and during that year I wanted to be understood more than anything, and then I thought, maybe other people think and feel how I feel, so I decided to create an artwork that might allow others to feel like they were heard and understood, and most importantly not alone, even though the subject in the artwork is the picture of loneliness and emptiness.
Tell us about the creative process you took with your work?
Well first I had to take photos, I got my mum to take the photos of me in my bathers in the shower, then I picked the ones that I liked, and edited them so that it would be easier to paint. Then I just started painting, and I did a lot of painting.
What advice would you have to Stage 2 Visual Arts students in 2021?
Make sure that you enjoy creating your artwork, even if you dislike the finished product, enjoying the making of it makes the whole process so much easier. For example, I loved painting with oils and painting the different types of water droplets, but like many artists I don’t like my final work, but I still had fun painting it!
What pathway are you taking after your SACE – university/TAFE/jobs?
Currently I am studying Bio-medical science at Adelaide Uni, but I will definitely continue to paint and draw in my own time, because I enjoy it so much.
