Japanese (background speakers)
Learning to speak, read, and write a second language will deepen your understanding of another culture and of your own language, thus enriching your life. Approximately 125 million people speak Japanese. You will lean the modern standard or official version of Japanese, including informal and formal language, by studying three themes — Self and Others, Tradition and Change in Japanese-speaking Communities, and Global Issues. Competency in this language will give you the option to pursue careers in interpreting, translation, education, and health both in Australia and overseas. Stage 1 and Stage 2 Japanese at background speakers level is available to students who have a background in Japanese and who have had more than a year’s education in a country where Japanese is spoken.
