Capabilities & Learner Profile

The SACE Board’s Capabilities & Learner Profile is designed to develop and recognise students' capabilities alongside their academic achievements.

It focuses on five key capabilities: personal enterprise, quality thinking, self-motivated learning, principled action, and collective engagement.

Capabilities can be developed in various contexts—such as the classroom, school-based extracurricular activities, personal experiences, or programs outside of school—reflecting the richness of the learning experiences that contribute to students' growth and development.

These capabilities are a combination of personal and social skills, knowledge, and attributes that empower students to apply what they have learned in meaningful and effective ways.

A student’s Capabilities & Learner Profile provides a comprehensive view of their strengths by presenting both capabilities and grades in a clear, easy-to-read digital format.

It helps students to gain deeper insight into their own capabilities, while offering tertiary institutions, employers, and others a comprehensive view of what a student knows and can achieve. The profile also helps better match students with courses and jobs that align with their individual strengths.

Since 2022, the Capabilities & Learner Profile has been in pilot phase, with over 50 schools and more than 2,500 students actively contributing to its development and refinement.

This initiative is central to the SACE Board’s strategic vision, Passport to Thrive, which aims to deliver an innovative qualification that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

What’s next?

The Capabilities and Learner Profile will continue to be piloted in 2025.
